What to Expect from an Employment Lawyer Consultation

Understanding what to expect during an employment lawyer consultation in Calgary can ease your concerns and help you prepare. Here’s a breakdown of how our consultations work:

what to expect at an employment law consultation in Alberta.

1. Initial Booking and Document Review

When you book a consultation with us, we begin by having one of our legal assistants or paralegals have a brief call with you to get a general sense of your issue and explain our process to you.  Then a lawyer will spend some time reviewing any documentation you provide. This process usually takes 10-20 minutes and helps us understand your case better. We recommend submitting relevant documents such as employment contracts, termination letters, employment policies or any correspondence related to your issue.

2. Consultation Meeting

Your consultation can take place in person, via Zoom, or over the phone, lasting one hour. During this meeting, we will discuss the facts of your case, explain the applicable laws, and explore potential solutions. Our goal is to provide clear, actionable advice tailored to your unique situation.

3. Clear Communication and Guidance

At Bow River Law LLP, we pride ourselves on our client-focused approach. During your consultation, our lawyers will take the time to listen to your concerns, understand your unique circumstances, and provide tailored legal advice. We believe in fostering open communication and building a strong attorney-client relationship based on trust and transparency.

Throughout your consultation, we will explain legal terms in plain language and ensure you understand every step of the process. Our focus is on providing practical advice and realistic expectations about your case’s outcome.

Common Questions About Employment Lawyer Consultations

What Can I Expect During the Initial Consultation?

During your initial consultation, we will review your case details, discuss the applicable laws, and explore possible solutions. This meeting is an opportunity for us to understand your situation and provide tailored legal advice.

How Much Will It Cost?

At Bow River Law LLP, we believe a full, thoughtful consultation is required in order for us to give you the best legal advice.

Employees seeking to book consultations with us will often tell us that they just need ten minutes to speak to a lawyer, and that their issue is simple.  However, we are not comfortable with a ten minute consultation, because we do not think it allows us enough time to properly evaluate your case and provide you advice.

Sometimes the issue is simple, but very often it is more complicated than it looks at first and requires significant time to evaluate by a lawyer reviewing documentation and interviewing the client.  Often the client is only partially aware of the relevant facts and legal issues, and the legal consult can reveal legal options the client did not know were available.

We charge for our consultations, because it allows us to dedicate the time and resources we consider necessary to thoroughly review and understand your case and to give you solid advice. We are not the cheapest employment law firm in Calgary or Alberta.  The cost of the consultation is intended to make our services reasonably accessible while maintaining our high standards of legal advice and representation.  The cost will be discussed when you book your appointment.

Do I Have a Strong Case?

Assessing the strength of your case is one of the main objectives of the consultation. By reviewing your documentation and discussing the facts, we can provide an honest assessment of your case’s viability.

What Are My Rights as an Employee?

Employment law can be complex, with various rights and protections in place for employees. During your consultation, we will explain your specific rights and how they apply to your situation.

How Long Will It Take to Resolve My Employment Dispute?

The timeline for resolving employment disputes varies depending on the case’s complexity. We will provide an estimated timeline during your consultation, helping you set realistic expectations.

What Outcomes Can I Expect?

Understanding the potential outcomes of your case is crucial. We will discuss possible results, such as compensation, reinstatement, or other remedies, giving you a clear picture of what to expect.

What Are the Potential Risks?

Every legal action carries some risks. We will discuss any potential downsides of pursuing your case, ensuring you make an informed decision.

How Experienced Are You with Cases Like Mine?

Our team has extensive experience handling a wide range of employment law cases. We will highlight relevant experience during your consultation, giving you confidence in our ability to manage your case effectively.

What Information and Documents Do I Need to Provide?

Providing thorough documentation is essential for a productive consultation. We will guide you on what information to bring,  to ensure your lawyer has the information required to properly understandyour case.  In some cases the lawyer will identify in the consultation further information that will be required to give you a complete legal opinion, but even in those cases the lawyer will normally be able to provide significant legal guidance in the initial consultation.

What Should I Do Next?

If you decide to proceed with legal action, we will outline the next steps and provide clear guidance on how to move forward.
